Magen Tzedek: Should We Recognize Ethically Kosher?

November 30, 2011

8:00 pm

Bonnie Sender

So maybe the food you buy is Kosher, but is it also humane and "menschy"?  Magen Tzedek's mission is to bring the Jewish commitment to ethics and social justice directly into the marketplace…and the home.  There is discussion about the creation of a new seal of approval, that will help assure consumers that the kosher products they purchase were not only produced in kosher facilities, but also take into account the social justice in the area of labor concerns, animal welfare, environmental impact, consumer issues and corporate integrity.  How will this symbol be awarded?  Who makes the decision?  What's the impact on consumers?  Join us for this lively discussion with Bonnie Sender.

For God's Sake: San Francisco's Attempt to Ban Circumcision

January 25, 2012

8:00 pm

Orin Rotman

In the 1960s and '70s, the San Francisco Bay Area was where the counterculture really started — the Free Speech Movement in Berkeley, the Summer of Love in Haight-Ashbury, gay rights in the Castro. Today, the Bay Area is challenging the larger culture in a new and controversial way - a referendum on the ballot in November that would make it the first major city in the U.S. to outlaw circumcision.  Should circumcision remain a private family matter or become a government decision?  Join Orin Rotman as he discusses this matter.

Redeeming Hostages...At what Price?

February 29, 2012

8:00 pm

Norm Kurtz

This past October the Israeli government agreed to release more than 1,000 prisoners (among whom were known terrorists and murderers) in order to secure the safe return of Israeli staff sergeant Gilad Shalit. Some say this was the right thing to do. Others maintain the price was too high and the resultant risks too great.  What is the "Jewish" perspective? What would you do if you were Prime Minister Netanyahu faced with this challenge? Join Norm Kurtz to explore this moral and ethical dilemma.
